Complete ESAT Guide 2025-2026

Everything You Need to Know About ESAT

Comprehensive guide to the Engineering and Science Admissions Test: test format, registration deadlines, syllabus topics, scoring, and proven preparation strategies for Cambridge, Imperial & UCL admissions.

What is ESAT?

The Engineering and Science Admissions Test (ESAT) is a computer-based admissions test required for engineering, science, natural sciences, and veterinary medicine courses at the University of Cambridge, Imperial College London, and University College London (UCL). Introduced in 2024, ESAT replaced Cambridge's previous admissions tests (NSAA and ENGAA) after Cambridge Assessment Admissions Testing ceased operations in 2023.

ESAT serves as a critical component of the university admissions process, helping elite institutions identify the most academically capable students from an exceptionally competitive applicant pool. Strong ESAT performance significantly improves your chances of receiving interview invitations and ultimately securing offers from these prestigious universities.

Why ESAT Matters for Your Application

Universities use ESAT scores alongside A-level predicted grades, personal statements, and interview performance to make admissions decisions. For Cambridge applicants, ESAT scores directly influence which students receive interview invitations. For Imperial College applicants, ESAT performance factors into both interview selection (for courses that conduct interviews) and final offer decisions.

Problem-solving ability
Your capacity to apply knowledge to unfamiliar challenges
Mathematical & scientific reasoning
Understanding fundamental principles beyond memorization
Academic potential
Whether you can thrive in demanding STEM tutorial environments
University readiness
Ability to work independently through complex problems

Unlike A-level exams where achieving top grades is increasingly common, ESAT is specifically designed to differentiate between exceptionally capable students who may all have achieved A* predicted grades.

🎓

Which Universities and Courses Require ESAT?

University of Cambridge

Cambridge requires ESAT for applicants to the following courses:

Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology
Engineering
Natural Sciences (all specialisms)
Veterinary Medicine

Important: Cambridge applicants must take ESAT in the October sitting (October 9-10, 2025 for 2026 entry). The January sitting is not available for Cambridge applicants.

Imperial College London

Imperial College requires ESAT for applicants to courses in the following departments:

Aeronautics
Bioengineering
Chemical Engineering
Civil and Environmental Engineering
Computing
Design Engineering
Earth Science and Engineering
Electrical and Electronic Engineering
Materials Science and Engineering
Mechanical Engineering
Physics

Imperial applicants can choose to take ESAT in either the October or January sitting, unless they are also applying to Cambridge (in which case October is mandatory).

University College London (UCL)

UCL requires ESAT for selected engineering and science courses. Check UCL's specific course pages to confirm whether your chosen program requires ESAT.

How to Register for ESAT

Registration is a multi-step process that requires advance planning.

1

Create a UAT-UK Account

Visit the UAT-UK website (esat-tmua.ac.uk) starting from June 2, 2025. Create a Pearson VUE UAT-UK account with personal information that exactly matches your UCAS application and identification documents.

2

Apply for Access Arrangements or Bursaries (If Applicable)

If you normally receive access arrangements for school exams (such as extra time, rest breaks, separate room), you can apply for the same arrangements for ESAT. Students facing financial hardship can apply for bursary vouchers to cover test fees.

3

Register and Select Your Modules

When booking opens, log into your UAT-UK account, select your test sitting, and choose the correct combination of modules required for your course(s). You cannot change your selected modules at the test center.

4

Book Your Test Center Appointment

After registering and selecting modules, the system will show you available Pearson VUE test centers. Book early to secure your preferred test center and time slot—popular centers fill quickly.

5

Prepare and Attend Your Test

Arrive at your test center with valid photo identification and test confirmation details. No calculators, phones, notes, or personal belongings allowed in the testing room.

Key Content Notes

No calculator allowed: All ESAT modules must be completed without calculators. Practice mental arithmetic!
Assumed knowledge: Physics, Chemistry, and Biology modules assume Mathematics 1 knowledge for calculations.
Content level: Mathematics 1 is GCSE; Mathematics 2 is A-level. Only attempt Maths 2 if studying A-level Mathematics.
📈

ESAT Scoring and What Scores Mean

How Scoring Works

Your raw score (number of correct answers) in each module is converted to a scaled score between 1.0 and 9.0, with 9.0 being the highest possible score. You receive a separate score for each module—there is no overall combined ESAT score.

No Negative Marking: Incorrect answers do not deduct points. Always answer every question, even if guessing!

Target Scores for Competitiveness

4.5
Average
Meeting the expected median
5.0
Above Average
Better than ~60% of test-takers
6.0
Strong
Top 20-30%
7.0+
Excellent
Top 10%

Important Context: These percentages represent the cohort of students applying to Cambridge, Imperial, and UCL for competitive STEM courses—an already highly selective group who are typically predicted A*/A grades. Scoring 5.0+ means performing better than the majority of this elite applicant pool.

🎯

How to Prepare for ESAT

Effective ESAT preparation balances content knowledge, problem-solving practice, and test familiarity.

Recommended Preparation Timeline

6 Months Before
Review ESAT specification, identify knowledge gaps, begin systematic GCSE revision, practice mental math
4-5 Months Before
Study Mathematics 2 topics (if applicable), deepen subject understanding, work through official sample questions
2-3 Months Before
Complete full practice papers under timed conditions, analyze mistakes, focus on weak areas
1 Month Before
Final specification review, multiple full-length timed practice sessions, exam technique focus
Week Before
Light revision only, review key formulas, confirm test center details, get adequate rest

Key Preparation Strategies

Master Mental Arithmetic

Multiplication tables, fraction operations, percentage calculations, powers and roots—practice until automatic.

Understand, Don't Memorize

Focus on why formulas work, underlying principles, and connections between topics.

Practice Under Timed Conditions

40 minutes for 27 questions = less than 90 seconds per question. Build speed and strategy.

Learn from Mistakes

Keep a mistake log. Identify patterns: concept gaps, careless errors, or misread questions.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

✗ Relying solely on calculators in practice—you won't have one in the test
✗ Studying A-level topics not in the specification—wasted time
✗ Neglecting Mathematics 1 because it's "easy"—it's compulsory and still requires practice
✗ Not practicing under timed conditions—time pressure is a major challenge
✗ Leaving preparation until the last month—build understanding over time

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I retake ESAT if I'm unhappy with my score?
No. You can only sit ESAT once per admissions cycle. If applying again in a future year, you would take the test again in that cycle.
Can I use a calculator?
No. Calculators are not permitted in any part of ESAT. You must solve all problems using mental arithmetic and the provided erasable whiteboard.
How difficult is ESAT compared to A-levels?
While content is primarily GCSE/AS-level, questions require creative problem-solving rather than straightforward recall. The time pressure and no-calculator requirement add significant difficulty.
What if I'm ill on test day?
Contact UAT-UK immediately. Medical documentation may allow you to sit the January test (if available) or defer to the next admissions cycle.
Should I guess on questions I don't know?
Yes, always. There's no negative marking, so even random guessing is better than leaving questions blank.
Can I change my module selection after booking?
No. Module selection is final once booked. To change modules, you must cancel your booking (potentially forfeiting fees) and rebook if time permits.
